Rooftops are urban oases, spaces of spatial liberation where the city's complexity unfolds. They function as urban panopticons, offering views of the city without being seen. Roof Garden is a project on the 8th-floor penthouse of an old Art Deco building by the canal in Brussels. With a 360° view, its design follows Japanese tradition, using the metaphor of an archipelago: the flat roof is the sea, and objects or islands float freely on it. Plant trays shaped like domes subdivide the space, and a surrounding pergola creates a smooth transition between inside and outside. The plants, chosen for their resilience to wind and limited water, echo a desert garden.
